St Kitts and Nevis: Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources Samal Duggins acknowledges the huge success of the St Kitts and Nevis Wahoo Fishing Tournament 2024 held on Sunday, November 24th, 2024 at the Old Road Fisheries Complex to observe World Fisheries Day 2024.
Minister Duggins shared the glimpses from the tournament and noted that this year’s Wahoo Tournament was nothing short of spectacular and that it was a perfect blend of skill and camaraderie. He also expressed deep appreciation for the vibrant fisheries sector.
The tournament commenced around 1 PM and all the fishers and attendees displayed a fantastic skill set of fishing and mutual bonding. The Fisheries Minister also joined the excitement, engaging with patrons and showing his support for this highly awaited event.
There was a great set of entertainment at the tournament played by recognised musicians such as the Xtortion, DJ Smoke, DJ Shaggy and Mention & Miller.
Along with the entertainment and excitement, the participants were also treated with engaging exhibitions from Budget Marine and St Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network that emphasised on the importance of the marine conservation and blue economy development.
The Budget Marine St Kitts also showcased their marine products at the event and extended congratulations to all the fishers who participated and made this event a success.
Remarkably, an astonishing 648.5 lb shark was brought in the Old Road by Rashawn Marshall and his team. Ackonwledging this, Minister Duggins mentioned that as a minister of fisheries sector, he is beyond impressed by this display of talent from the fisherfolk.
Adding more entertainment to the tournament, the gathering celebrated with folklore performances that showcased the rich culture, making the event a true community festival.
Notably, the top three winners were rewarded with cash prizes with the first-place holder awarded with a whooping prize money of $2000 XCD. The second winner got $1500 XCD and the third winner got $1000 XCD.
The Department of Marine Resources thanked all the incredible fishers who participated and to the patrons who extended their support to make the tournament unforgettable.
Minister Samal Duggins said that this event has left an indelible mark on all who attended and that the 2025 edition of the Wahoo Tournament will be even bigger and better.
