PM Terrance Drew to introduce 3 bills during National Assembly sitting, Image: SKNIS

The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, recently took to his social media account to inform the people about the proceeding of the National Assembly. The Prime Minister will introduce and read three important pieces of legislation at the sittings of the national assembly. 

Per the update shared by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance, health and national security et al., Dr Terrance Drew the next sitting of the St Kitts and Nevis national assembly will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2023. It will start at 10:00 AM, and all the members of the national congregation will sit in deliberation for the three bills. Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew will introduce the following three bills for their first readings in the national assembly:

  • Banking (Amendment) Bill, 2023; 
  • Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (Amendment) Bill, 2023 
  • Nurses and Midwives (registration) (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

The amendments introduced by Dr Terrance Drew will simplify the execution and regulation of the country’s laws. The Under the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (Amendment) Bill, 2023, the government seeks to add a new Section, 4A. Under this section, the government will introduce, Inconsistency with other legislation.  

Under this, In the event of any inconsistency between this Act’s provisions and any other enactment’s operation, the provisions of this Act shall prevail to the extent of the Inconsistency.”

Under the Banking (Amendment) Bill, 2023, the government will deliberate on the amendments of the various aspects of the law. The government seeks to amend several sections to make the law more accessible. 

The Final Bill to be read in the National assembly during the March 7, 2023 sitting will be the Nurses and Midwives (registration) (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

The government seeks to introduce to amend the Nurses and Midwives (Registration) Act, Cap. 9.17 and for related matters

The Act is amended in the Second Schedule in paragraph 11 by replacing subparagraph (1) as follows:

(1) Where a nurse is desirous of having their name retained on the Register, they shall, every two years before the 31st day of December, forward to the Registrar notification in Form 5 in Schedule 2 of their intention to remain on the Register.”. 

During the session, Minister of Health Dr Terrance Drew will move for the second reading of the  Nurses and Midwives (registration) (Amendment) Bill, 2023. Prime Minister Dr Drew shared that the proceedings will broadcast live on ZIZ Radio (96 FM) and participating radio stations. Additionally, the session can be watched live at Channel 5 in St. Kitts and Channel 98 in Nevis.
