Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr Terrance Drew travelled to Saint Lucia for the official state visit of the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmad Tinubu. The Prime Minister was accompanied by several other leaders from the OECS.
This visit is crucial and geopolitically relevant because this is the first time that President Tinubu has visited the Caribbean
The Prime Minister shared some images from the visit on his social media account. During his trip to Saint Lucia, he had the opportunity to meet the other leaders of the OECS. The visit was a step towards regional unity and collaboration between the states under the OECS.
At the same time, the visit is also undertaken as an extension of the deepening ties of the Caribbean region with Africa. The OECS leaders and PM Terrance Drew came together for a Special Sitting of the Senate and House of Assembly.
The sitting was hosted in honour of the visiting Nigerian President Bola Ahmad Tinubu, Previously, PM Drew had visited Nigeria for the Afreximbank’s 32nd Annual General Meeting.
The meeting was hosted last week in Abuja, with the aim of improving economic partnership between Africa and the Caribbean. The leaders of the OECS have shared that they were delighted to have the opportunity to interact with the President of Nigeria.
The leader has claimed that it is important for the Caribbean region and Africa to come up with more areas for collaboration. The two regions have several similar practices in cultures and shared history of colonial rule and slavery.
The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr Terrance Drew asserted that they want to come up with ways to deepen collaboration between the two regions. The decision to organise the 2026 edition of the Afri Caribbean trade and investment forum is also part of the same mandate.
During his visit to Saint Lucia, PM Terrance Drew and OECS leaders are expected to discuss the beginning of projects and initiatives which can benefit both the Caribbean region and Nigeria in equal measure.
