Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr Timothy Harris applauded the “Team Unity” government. He said in just seven years; the government accomplished primary goals designed to uplift the people and country. He was speaking at the Leadership Matters programme on Tuesday.
He said the Team Unity government assumed office in 2015, provided good governance and strengthened the economy of St Kitts and Nevis.
Listing down the critical decisions of the government, PM Harris said “Team Unity” passed significant legislation such as the Freedom of Information Bill, operationalisation of the Integrity in Public Life Act, the appointment of the three-member Integrity Commission.
PM Harris said on February 15, 2015, St Kitts and Nevis was on the verge of a new start, even though there had been a lot of trouble and struggle because of the Motion of No Confidence (MONC) had been put on hold for 26 months, “Many people thought this was a violation of democracy. He said the government, to its credit, has made fundamental changes to good governance in the country both legally and administratively,”.
“We had made a law called the Motion of No Confidence Act, 2019 that says when a MONC can be held. At this point, we’ve figured out what the Constitution meant when it said at a reasonable time”.
“To its credit, our government has actually improved our country’s governance, both legislatively and administratively. The Motion of No Confidence Act, 2019 — a specified period for holding a MONC – has been created by legislation. In essence, we’ve defined what a reasonable time means in the Constitution,” said PM Harris.
He said he encounters the public on a regular basis through initiatives such as Working for You and Leadership Matters, as well as press conferences and monthly Parliamentary sessions.
“We report to the people on a regular basis. Our development of democracy has been lauded by independent groups, as indicated by our high rating in independent publications like the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index,” said PM Harris.
