Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew and his administration will present the ‘Comprehensive Pension Bill’ to the National Assembly on April 17, 2025 for its first reading. The intent of this bill is to pay long overdue pensions to Government Auxiliary Employees (GAEs) which include crossing guards, hospital maids, environmental workers, drain cleaners, and other vital public service personnel.

The bills would be introduced by Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew who is also the minister of finance, national security, citizenship, immigration and social security with an aim to address the need for compensating the immense injustice faced by numerous workers who provided their continued and dedicated service to the Federation while being unsupported in their post-service life.

He said, “This Labour administration will lay before our Parliament a bill to bring, I would say, justice to the thousands of GAE workers who would benefit.”

PM Drew also remarked that the funds will have to be set aside for the legislation which is bound to pension entitlement because GAE workers need and deserve such funds.

In addition, this initiative adds on to the stride in July of 2024, when the government initiated pension payments to hundreds of retired GAEs who had previously been unable to claim these funds.

Importance of the Comprehensive Pension Bill

The passing of the Comprehensive Pension Bill is important in terms of acknowledgment and appreciation of the public sector employees who have unceasingly served this nation.

Moreover, the draft legislation requires that GAEs will be eligible for receiving pensions at age sixty-two, provided they have completed a minimum of fifteen years of service. The pension payments started in January 2024 and the eligible GAEs now receive monthly pension payments for lifetime.

Also note that this decision is part of the broader social equality policy of the St Kitts and Nevis government. PM Drew’s administration has also implemented the ASPIRE Program, which provides young citizens with $1,000 seed accounts, and the recent 8% increase in salary for civil servants further demonstrates his commitment towards enhanced citizen welfare from all angles.
