Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew met with the field technician for Mcllhenny Company, Christian Brown on Thursday, February 27th, 2025. Brown was accompanied by the Special Advisory to St Kitts and Nevis’ Agricultural Ministry, Ashton Stanley.
Mcllhenny Company, founded in 1868 by an American Businessman Edmund Mcllhenny, is responsible for making Tabasco products. The company created the infamous Tabasco Red Pepper Sauce whose popularity sky-rocketed in the southern US during the 19th century.
PM Drew and Brown discussed the development of pepper-growing operations in St Kitts and Nevis while highlighting the government’s commitment to encouraging agricultural growth in the nation.
The beginning of a collaboration
The partnership between the government of St Kitts and Nevis and the world renowned TABASCO Brand first started in 2024, when the government of the twin island nation launched a project to produce Tabasco peppers for exports, which will help improve the overall economy of the country.
The project was launched under the Sustainable Economic Expansion and Diversification (SEED) initiative to reduce the reliance on food imports and develop the agricultural sector and promote self-productivity among the farmers.
PM Drew said that by partnering with Tabasco International, they are enhancing their agricultural output while also positioning St Kitts and Nevis as one of the top players in the global spice market.
Launch of Department of Agriculture Tabasco Pepper Experiment Plot Project
The Department of Agriculture Tabasco Pepper Experiment Plot Project was launched during an official ceremony in November, during which the Agriculture Minister Samal Duggins was also present. This initiative was a collaborative effort between St Kitts and Nevis and the Tabasco brand.
Moreover, farmers are also provided training on the best pepper cultivation practices, with significant investments being made under this initiative to improve agricultural infrastructure, and promoting eco-friendly farming practices for long-term sustainability.
