Officers at Nevis’ Prison Farm at Hard Times are frustrated over living conditions.
Officers have been complaining for several months and according to a source, several of them have been on sick leave or not reporting for duty.
“For months the officers have been complaining about their living conditions and their concerns have fallen on deaf ears. In January this year when heavy rain fell, several officers who were asleep had to seek shelter elsewhere as the rain soaked their beds and personal effects,” a source said.
“To make matters worst a new office has been constructed on the Prison Farm which was furnished with new windows, doors, etc. When officers questioned how is it they can source funds for new windows for a useless office but cannot find money to change the windows by their beds, there was no reply,” another source stated.
Officers are said to be further outraged that in January this year, the chief officer of the Prison Farm on Nevis held a meeting with officials of the Nevis Island Administration, and “instead of seeking assistance to purchase a few windows or tiles for the floor, he asked for air condition units.”
