St Kitts and Nevis: The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Marine Resources, Samal Duggins addressed the nation on the occasion of World Fisheries Day 2024 and highlighted all the achievements they have recorded in the fisheries sector over the past year.
Minister Duggins extended warm greetings and expressed deep gratitude to the dedicated fishers whose efforts ensured the continued supply of fish to feed the country. “Your hard work not only strengthens our food security but also preserves the cultural and economic foundation of our society,” he emphasised.
Minister Samal Duggins mentioned all the accomplishments that the Ministry has achieved over the past year. He noted that the Department of Marine Resources has focused on advancing sustainable fishing practices and supporting the need of fishing communities.
The key initiatives and improvements that have been made this year are as follows:
- Introduction of biodegradable fish pots for sustainable fishing practices was introduced this year. These fish pots have a panel secured with biodegradable jute twine, which begins to degrade after 21 days. This mechanism helps reduce the issue of ghost fishing and contributes to the preservation of marine life.
- The Fisheries Department partnered with COASTFISH Project and provided resources to help fishers adopt biodegradable alternatives.
- The Department installed artificial reefs as part of the COAST FISH initiative which improve marine habits, supports biodiversity, and enhance the fish stocks.
- Inauguration of the Old Road Fish Depot which serves the people of Old Road and surrounding areas by providing access to fresh fish.
- Commissioned new enforcement vessel “Prosperity” that improves the ability to monitor and enforce regulations within the waters, protecting against illegal fishing practices.
- The Fisheries Department collaborates with Food and Agriculture Organsization (FAO) to support both ecological sustainability and economic growth.
Looking forward to 2025, the Ministry is also planning to establish two shrimp grow-out ponds to test the feasibility of shrimp farming in St Kitts and Nevis. Notably, the Ministry remains determined in its dedication to supporting the fisheries sector, focusing on innovation and collaboration.
