Dr Geoffrey Hanley, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Housing of St Kitts and Nevis, toured the first building of the East Street Affordable Housing Development on Wednesday, March 5th, 2025. The building, soon to be finished, will welcome four families as part of the government’s goal to provide affordable houses to the locals in partnership with the National Housing Corporation (NHC)

Minister Geoffrey Hanley toured the two-story building to evaluate the progress of the four apartments, each featuring two bedrooms. He said that the project is part of the government’s efforts to redevelop the East Basseterre area that he represents in the Federal Parliament.

He stated that he once ran through the yards of many of the one-bedroom apartments as a child and that it is a great achievement for the government to fit four, two bedroom apartments as they continue the construction of affordable houses.

While the finishing touches are being made to the first building in the area, work has started on a second apartment building on the corner of East Street and Pond Road.

Community Participation

According to the update shared by Minister Hanley, most of the construction of the building was done by the residents of the area due to the government’s commitment of involving the local communities in the redevelopment of the area to improve the living conditions of residents.

He also applauded the workmanship of the contractors and others who worked on the construction of the building and said that he is super proud of the work done.
