Dr Cameron Wilkinson, Medical Chief of Staff at the Joseph N. France General Hospital, said that as the borders would reopen on October 31, hospitals across St. Kitts and Nevis are prepared to care for persons who may become Medical Chief of Staff at the Joseph N. France General Hospital affected severely by COVID-19.

He said that they have been preparing for this day for seven months, and at the Joseph N. France General Hospital, they have a ward which is designated for COVID-19 patients.

He added that they have around 15 to 18 beds there. That ward has not been in use since they did not have any cases.

Dr Wilkinsons said that all those beds are ready and available. All the beds have ventilators. There is more than a sufficient supply of ventilators.

Dr Wilkinson noted that the staff had been trained in dealing with the patients of coronavirus.

He said that the emergency room at the Joseph N. France Hospital was separated into two sections, and they have a section which is designated for persons with respiratory illnesses.

So when the borders open, and they have an increased number of persons with respiratory illnesses, they would be directed to that section where there would not be any mix in with the regular patients.

The Medical Chief of Staff said that in the eleven clinics around the Federation, there are designated days where persons with respiratory illnesses would be seen.

He said that they had augmented their staff with over 30 nurses and four critically care specialists from Cuba.

He said that they are still here and they would be here for a while until the Federation have gotten over the hump where it is certain that there would be no second wave of the pandemic.

Dr Judy Nisbett, Chair of Nevis’ Covid-19 Task Force, said that the Alexandra Hospital is also ready for the reopening of the borders.
