Minister of Environment and Climate Action of St Kitts and Nevis, Senator Dr Joyelle Clarke, convened a series of meetings in Antigua and Barbuda on Thursday, August 25.
While in Antigua and Barbuda, she met with the Minister of Environment, Health and Wellness, and civil society organizations, Molwyn Joseph, to discuss pertinent matters relative to both countries and the Caribbean region.
Senator Dr Clarke and Minister Joseph discussed essential environmental concerns faced by both islands, including the problem of water access, during a courtesy call.
The Minister of Environment, Health and Wellness of Antigua and Barbuda noted that the regional conversations were essential for readying the Caribbean leaders for the upcoming UN Conference of Parties (COP 27).
The conference will discuss loss and damage issues, and adaptation finance would be a priority for the Caribbean region.
Notably, the conversation focused on Dr Clarke’s primary reason for the visit: engagement with the CSOs for Feminists organizing around Climate Justice in the Caribbean region.
Dr Clarke described the interaction as fruitful.
She also added, “the visit with Minister Joseph and the Staff at the Department of Environment, Health and Wellness in Antigua and Barbuda re-stated the need for continuous regional dialogue in charting a course for the climate-resilience of the region.”
The minister of Antigua and Barbuda expressed his desire to see Antigua and Barbuda work with other Caribbean countries to help build climate resilience in the region. Both the ministers agreed on the need for collaboration to support Climate Action in the area.
Further, Dr Clarke engaged in a series of meetings with relevant civil society organizations, including the Environmental Awareness Group and Women Voices for Leadership in the Caribbean.
Dr Clarke also engaged in a unique news feature on ABS Radio and TV stations with Ayesha Constable, Climate and Gender Specialist, who is spearheading the conversation in the region for a Global Fund for the Women funded project dubbed Movement Led Approach for Feminist Organizing and Climate Justice in the Caribbean.
