Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Denzil Douglas recently visited Antigua and Barbuda for the 55th OAS Meeting. In Antigua and Barbuda, Dr Douglas highlighted his country’s commitment to protecting the rights of the people, residents and citizens.
The Minister highlighted that this is important for the nation to work together with the OAS. He proudly recollected that St Kitts and Nevis has deposited two critical instruments of accession to the OAS.
The two instruments of accession to the major Inter American Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against persons with disabilities and the Inter American Convention on protecting the human rights of older persons.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Denzil Douglas announced that St Kitts and Nevis became the 20th nation to become part of the first legally binding instrument specifically addressing the rights of people living with disabilities.
Dr Denzil Douglas used this as an example to establish that the government is dedicated to protecting and safeguarding the rights of the people. St Kitts and Nevis upholds the fundamental rights of the people of the country.
The Minister further added that it is the responsibility of the administration to work for the welfare of the people and make sure they are not discriminated against.
St Kitts and Nevis is also the 13th nation in the world to enter a convention to protect the older persons in the country. It is to be highlighted that the federation of St Kitts and Nevis is dedicated to making the lives of the elder population easy.
The convention that the country has entered ensures full recognition and exercise of human rights and fundamental freedoms for the older people. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Denzil Douglas highlighted that the country has taken several steps in this direction.
In August 2022, right after the administration led by Dr Terrance Drew took office, they took steps to increase awareness about the rights of the people. The administration has taken the initiative to establish legislations that make the lives of the senior citizens easier.
