The Electoral Commissioners of St Kitts and Nevis resigned on December 1 and 2. The names of the electoral officers were Attorneys-at-Law Jason Hamilton and O’Grenville Browne.
The attorneys at law concerned resigned from their positions as the electoral commissioners by means of letters which they addressed to the Governor-General dated December 1 and 2, 2022.
The Governor-General’s office informed Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew along with Leader of the opposition, Mark Brantley about the resignations.
Following this, the Prime Minister appointed Attorney-at-Law Vaughan Henderson as his nominated Electoral Commissioner. The Prime Minister Dr Drew informed the Governor General about the appointment.
On the same day, the Governor-General was also informed by the Leader of the Opposition that he had nominated Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr Joseph Liburd. He also agreed to serve as his appointed Electoral Commissioner.
Following the resignations, The Prime Minister, Dr Terrance Drew expressed his thanks the two outgoing Electoral Commissioners “for their service to the People of St Kitts and Nevis.” At the same time, he wished the two Electoral Commissioners-Elect well in their new posts.
Dr Terrance Drew implored them “to be guided by principles of integrity and transparency in their new roles.”
Reportedly, the new Electoral Commissioners-Elects will assume their respective offices shortly. The Chairman of Electoral Commission, Attorney-at-Law Nassibou Butler, is currently serving in his position.
Section 33 of the Constitution of St Kitts and Nevis states that the functions of the Electoral Commission is to supervise Supervisor of Elections as he performed his various duties and roles.
According to the constitrion of St Kitts and Nevis, The Electoral Commission shall consist of:
- A chairperson, who is appointed by the Governor-General, acting in their deliberate judgment.
- One member appointed by the Governor-General, working following the advice of the Prime Minister.
- One member appointed by the Governor-General, acting following the advice of Leader of Opposition.
