On September 4, many Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica in Paterson, New Jersey, gathered to witness the renaming of the street. “Jamaica Way” is the name of Vreeland Avenue, which was between 17th and 19th Avenues.
The famous street in City is being renamed as an honour to the outstanding contribution made by the people of Jamaica and people related to Jamaica. The name was unveiled by the City’s Mayor, Andre Sayegh. Mayor Sayegh said that naming a portion of Vreeland Avenue, Jamaica Way, is a proud moment for their multicultural municipality.
While talking about the area, mayor Sayegh that the area is hosting a significant population of Jamaicans and many Jamaican businesses are also settled here. He said, “I am honoured to support the street naming and would like the world to know that ‘one love’ is what we strive for in “one Paterson,” which is a better place because of Jamaicans who call our city home.”
Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange while giving her message on the special occasion, said that the government had taken this decision to honour that they are continuing to ensure that Jamaica has been standing at the centre of commerce, culture and social engagement in the City of Paterson, New Jersey.
Minister Grange said, “the renaming of this street is a testament to the span of influence spawned by members of the Jamaican Diaspora in the United States. We on the rock continue to be proud of Jamaicans all over the world who, through activism and civic and political engagement, have influenced and inspired development wherever they are to be found.”
Minister Grange said that she against congratulate them again on this significant occasion of the renaming the street in Paterson, New Jersey, as Jamaica Way.
Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States Audrey Marks complimented the Jamaican Organization of New Jersey, Greater Passaic Chapter and the Paterson City Council for timely honour.
