PM Timothy Harris congratulated the citizens of St Kitts and Nevis on the 38th Anniversary of Independence Day. PM Harris, addressing the nation on 19 September 2021 and highlighted many main issues.
PM, while recalling the historic day when the country got its independence, said that 38 years ago, the sun rose on the sovereign state of St Kitts and Nevis. On the evening of 18 September 1983, the country was prepared for independence, and the next day the Flag of St Kitts and Nevis was hoisted high in the air of an independent nation, and the citizens experienced the sunrise for the first time after independence. The day is also recalled as the starting day of adaptation, diversification and re-creation of the federation.
St Kitts and Nevis have been the smallest independent nation in the western hemisphere.
According to the statement of PM Harris, from that time, it was not easy to reach the place where the country is currently. The country has long records of many achievements. St Kitts and Nevis is trying to achieve the national goal for developments that include development in public health education infrastructure, economic transformation, international trades and human rights along with sports and culture of the country.
PM Skerrit said, “We are constantly being rated among the best in the region, across so many international developmental indices. Literacy rate, per capita income, the rule of law, Debt to GDP ratios, ICT indicators, transparency and good governance, are some examples of areas in which we have been leading our peers.”
According to PM Harris, the country only after the short period of independence had given World Champion in Athletics many Olympians who are recognized internationally. Many artists in different fields of arts and a renowned FIFA referee, assessor and trainer.
PM Harris said that they had hosted ICC cricket and FIFA football. The federation also gave many shining stars in robotics competitions. Recently the team St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots Franchise won the Caribbean Premier League title of 2021 years. Likewise, as proud patriots of their beautiful nation, their people must continue to strive to emerge as champions even in the face of adversity.
After facing all economic hardships, the government is ready to deliver the second stimulus package early this year to give a more robust and safer future further.
PM Harris said that the country had been battling with the COVID-19 pandemic for 18 months. The medical teams have been fighting with the infectious virus of COVID-19 to safeguard the citizens of St Kitts and Nevis. The government had efficiently handled the political stability, economic development, quality of life and also standards of living of the citizens on the island. The government also maintained a good balance in employment and wages for the employees during the pandemic. St Kitts and Nevis also secured 1st position in CBI index 2021. The twin-island federation also remains among the best places for tourism.
PM Harris, while concluding his address, said, “Together we can, and we will move this nation to an even better standing. Together we can, and we will achieve the stronger, safer future we all look forward to and deserve. We will do this even in the face of adversity. Let us adapt, diversify, and re-create together for a better St. Kitts and Nevis. I wish all Happy Independence Day.
