The Ministry of Health in the government of St Kitts and Nevis held a Nurse Manager’s Leadership Retreat. The retreat allowed the nursing staff of the nursing fraternity to focus on further developing the leadership skills of nurse managers. The Ministry of Health hosted the retreat to benefit the nursing staff by cultivating more robust collaborative practices. The event took place on Thursday, August 3, 2023.
According to the update the Ministry of Health shared, the exercise helped the various healthcare institutions’ nursing staff streamline their approach towards the philosophy of nursing and effective meeting management. Curtis Martin, a Training and Development Specialist attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, facilitated the retreat.
Curtis Martin is known for his innovative approaches to leadership and team development. His expertise was critical towards moulding the future of nursing leadership within the Ministry of Health in the government of St Kitts and Nevis.
Meanwhile, Dr Patrick Martin, physician and advisor to the St Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Health, was also present at the retreat. He shared his insights on Effective Meeting Management with the nurses participating in the retreat.
Twenty dedicated and hardworking nurses from the fraternity were present at the retreat. During the session, Principal Nursing Officer Dr Rondalyn Bradshaw discussed some of the core Philosophies of Nursing in detail. The discussion explored the evolution and implications of Nursing on current and future practice.
She spoke especially on the importance of empathy, compassion, and continual learning. She further termed them as indispensable elements in nursing. Finally, the Director of Institutional-Based Nursing Services, Kerry Williams-Tuckett, delivered a compelling presentation on being a leader versus a manager. She shared practical strategies to ensure the nurse managers identified the needed skills to become better managers.
The nursing fraternity retreat was one of the most critical learning experiences not only for the nurses and the high-level officials of the Ministry of Health. As per the Ministry, the retreat helped the leaders within the Health Ministry to expand their knowledge and skills and network with their peers. It also helped in fostering a shared vision and harmony.
