St Kitts and Nevis has announced the competition for the selection of a theme for the 2026 edition of the independence day celebration of the country. The nation, which attained independence from the British in 1983 is celebrating 43 years of nationhood.
The theme competition is a good opportunity for the leadership of the country to involve the people of the island in the organization of the event. The programme has been one of the most important national events for the country as it brings people from all over the country together in celebration.
Historically, the theme of every year’s independence day celebration has been inspired by the goals and aspirations of the country for the next year. The theme has also been a recall of the resilience of the country. For the 43rd edition, the people of the island will be required to submit an original theme. The theme must capture the nation’s journey over the past 43 years, its present reality and its aspirations for the future.
As part of this competition, the committee wants a short, powerful phrase or sentence which has no more than six to eight words. The theme is expected to be uplifting, inclusive, and uniquely reflective of the country. Entries should be authentic, imaginative, and free from clichés, while speaking to the national spirit and shared vision of the people.
According to the competition guidelines, participants also have to submit their full name, address and preferred contact number along with their entry. The competition will be open to citizens and residents of St.Kitts and Nevis. The winner of the competition will be expected to to participate in some of the Independence 43 activities.
The winning entry will receive a cash prize of EC$1,000. In a joint statement, Dr Marcus L Natta and Viera Galloway, who are Co-Chairs of the Independence Organising Committee, said the theme competition is an important part of the annual independence celebration tradition. The co-chairs also noted that this is an opportunity for the people of St Kitts and Nevis to help shape the national message for this milestone year.
Entries must be submitted by midnight on Thursday, April 30, 2026. Late submissions will not be acknowledged or considered as a part of the competition
