The department of Cultural Heritage organised a night of remembrance to commemorate the tragic massacre and expulsion of the Kalinago people from St Kitts and Nevis. The theme of the event was “Ancestral Echoes: Remembering the Blood, Honouring the Resilience,”

The event was held at the Historic Bloody Point in Challengers Village on August 28, 2026. The aim of the initiative was to pay tribute to the people who lost their lives and were expelled from homes.

The event was attended by government officials, members of the community, nationals of St Kitts and Nevis, people from the Rastafarian Community. The officials have shared that historians and cultural enthusiasts also attended the commemoration.

The Department of Cultural Heritage, under the leadership of Minister Samal Duggins also welcomed Anette Sanford, who became the first woman to serve as Chief of the Kalinago Territory in 400 years in 2024. Sanford met with Minister Samal Duggins and joined him in lighting the torch of remembrance in the honor of the lives that were lost nearly four hundred years previously.

During the visit of the Kalinago Chief from Dominica, they also visited Bloody Point where hundreds of Kalinago were massacred by Sir Thomas Warner and his men. The night of remembrance which was hosted on Saturday paid their tributes to the Kalinago people who lost their lives in the massacre.

The authorities reiterate that this was the darkest part of the history of St kitts and Nevis.

During the commemoration gathering, the people of St Kitts and Nevis witnessed Traditional drumming and dance performances. The officials suggest that performances enhanced and enriched the programme.

The event was hosted with the aim of preserving historical memory and making sure that the stories of the indigenous people of St Kitts and Nevis continue to be told to the future generations of the country.
