Premier of Nevis Mark Brantley has Dr Terrance Drew and his team for making sure that NIA receives grant funds for the development of Nevis. The Premier shared that this level of support had not been available to Nevis during the previous administrations.
The Premier of Nevis highlighted that prior to this government, Nevis had not been included in development projects over years. The major example comes in the form of the grants and funds that the federal government has been receiving from Republic of China (Taiwan).
The Premier of Nevis has confirmed that prior to PM Terrance Drew taking office, Brantley has not been aware of the funds received by the federation from Taiwan. However, after Dr Drew took office, he organised a meeting with the Premier and informed him about it.
Premier Mark Brantley acknowledged that the Prime Minister did not have to do this, as he is not a part of Drew’s cabinet. however, despite the difference of political alignment, PM Drew called on him as the Premier.
During this meeting, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew asked Premier Brantley if he was aware of the funds. He also promised that Nevis will be receiving 25% of the funds that the federation receives earmarked for development.
The Premier made this announcement in the July edition of his monthly press conference. He gave credit to the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis for including Nevis and the NIA and helping in a smooth flow of funds for development in Nevis.
Premier of Nevis, Mark Brantley is the leader of the opposition in the federal government and has been the face of the Parliamentary opposition for three years. However, this political difference of opinion has not deterred both the leaders from working together.
Both the leaders in the Federal Government and the NIA have been working together for for years. It is to be noted that that the two leaders and their cabinets have been meeting regularly ever since Dr Drew took office.
The Premier of Nevis also noted that even though he was in the Cabinet with the previous administration, the former Prime Minister kept the funds from Taiwan a secret.
