Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit emphasised the Dominica Labour Party’s long-standing unity at the Delegates Conference which was held on November 10, 2024. He highlighted the nation’s groundbreaking projects and established their unwavering determination to conquer challenges, paving the way for a prosperous future.
The Delegates Conference, hosted by the Dominica Labour Party was organised under the theme, “A Future of Hope,” where the delegates of the Labour Party celebrated their unity and discussed their vision to make Dominica into a resilient nation. Prime Ministers of Saint Lucia and Grenada, Philipe J. Pierre and Dickon Mitchell, respectively, joined the event in display of unity.
PM Skerrit shed light on the Dominica’s transformative projects such as the construction and rehabilitation of schools, construction of Dominica-China Friendship Hospital, building homes, and many more.
Mentioning about these projects of Dominica, the Prime Minister stated that, “We have only come this far because we have stood together, shoulder to shoulder, guided by our principles and driven by our dedication to the people of Dominica.”
Significantly, the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell and the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J. Pierre, joined the Delegates Conference as guest speakers and addressed the attendees on the significance of unity among the cabinet members and the sister islands.
PM Dickon Mitchell addressed the nation and noted that as a guest speaker he is present at the conference because he is the political leader of a sister party called National Democratic Congress.
During his address, he stated that, “I hope you recognise that since the formation of the Dominica Labour Party and since this party has entered into electoral politics, you have won 10 times.”
He noted that the people of Dominica need to appreciate this success and the longevity that comes from the team. It is a legacy of commitment to serving the people of Dominica and a legacy of commitment to building the Dominica Labour Party.
Prime Minister Philip J Pierre also gave a speech and extended gratitude to PM Roosevelt Skerrit for being his inspiration to be a leader. He stated an incident where he came to Dominica and expected to take a taxi but PM Skerrit sent someone to pick him up. He said that PM Skerrit invited him in his cabinet office and that was the beginning of the inspiration for him to make him lead the party to a landslide election victory 3 years from then.
Defying Hurricane, Building Resilience
PM Roosevelt Skerrit, in his address said that the Dominica Labour Party has always faced their challenges united, with foremost response and adequate use of resources.
He stated about the time when Hurricane Maria hit the coasts of the nation, and how everybody was worried about the aftermath of the calamity and the effects that the disaster would leave on Dominica. But the Labour Party made every possible effort with the available resources which concluded in a better tomorrow.
In addition to this, PM Skerrit also talked about their response to the challenges faced by Dominica after the occurrence and destruction caused by Hurricane Erika and Maria respectively.
He highlighted about the initiatives taken by the Dominica such as emergency agricultural livelihoods and climate resilience project, and the housing recovery program that played a vital role in reviving the nation’s hope.
“Everybody said Dominica is finished. And guess what today? The world cannot talk about resilience unless they talk about the commonwealth of Dominica. The world is amazed at what we have been able to do as a nation largely with our own resources,” added PM Skerrit.
Challenges Faced by Farmers
Prime Minister Skerrit also underscored the obstructions faced by the farmers in the Agricultural Sector and stated that it is an important breakthrough for the farmers of the nation to be a part of the international market.
The Prime Minister stated that the New International Airport would attract large number of tourists which will be a platform for the farmers to showcase and sell their locally produced goods, generating revenue and fostering the agricultural sector of the nation.
Notably, Dominica has recently laid the foundation stone for the New International Airport which will provide opportunities to the locals of the country.
Dominica’s Key Projects
PM Skerrit has underlined about several programmes and initiatives of Dominica such as the National Employment Programme and the ‘Yes, We Care Programme’.
He noted that these programmes have opened doors for the people of Dominica to build a better and resilient island nation. The Prime Minister also hailed the people who are working at the back of the stage as they are doing a noteworthy job.
Concluding his address, Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit stated that every success they have achieved is a result of their united effort and togetherness. He extended heartiest thanks to the Dominica Labour Party for their support and their continued determination to make Dominica, a thriving country.
