The government of St Kitts and Nevis has promised the people living with disabilities that they will be given greater focus in the coming year. The promise comes as the nation moves towards building a more inclusive society for the people.
The work for this mandate has been in progress for several months and will be seen solidifying in the next year. The island nation has confirmed that they deposited instruments of accession at the Organisation of American States (OAS) in May 2025.
The document confirmed that the nation is dedicated to improving human rights protection in tandem with the rest of the world. The island has agreed to be part of a Inter-American Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities.
The Senator and Junior Minister responsible for Youth Empowerment, Ageing and Disabilities has increased their presence in the community among the people living with disabilities. The island has been working to make sure more people are conscious regarding the persons with disabilities and their experiences in society.
The Ministry has been organizing events to help the communities coexist with people living with disabilities. The initiatives include: sign language training for civil servants, capacity building at schools among students of young ages.
The aim of these initiative is to bring more children living with disabilities into the mainstream so that they can learn alongside their peers more easily. To make the transition easy, the Ministry under Isalean Phillip has organized workshops for teachers across various schools.
The teachers have been trained in order to help them become better guides for children living with disabilities. The training will also make public schools a positive and engaging experience for children living with disabilities.
Further, the Ministry has also established a committee to assist with parking permits for wheelchair users. The Ministry has been advocating for access to housing, employment options and skills building for persons living with disabilities
