The government of St Kitts and Nevis has called on the street vendors from all over the country to play a more active role in keeping the business spaces clean, safe and compliant. The administration has shared that they are continuously making efforts to support to the street vendors.
The efforts are being concentrated on the efforts to ensure order and public health for the people of the country. The call was made by the Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Action, and Constituency Empowerment.
The call was related to handling the challenges which they are facing with environment concerns, traffic congestion and risk to public health.
The Minister has made these calls during his most recent edition of the National Assembly. She has shared that they are calling for Partnership and conversation within her ministry.
She has also added that this is the reason why vendors who are occupying green space without permits are engaged repeatedly.
They are informed and spoken to to explain that they are occupying unauthorized space because either it is going to cause traffic congestion or environmental issues.
The Minister has shared that in most of these cases, they work to provide alternatives to the vendors. She reiterated that the government maintains their supportive approach towards the vendors of the country.
She added that the Ministry is focussing on engaging with the vendors across the nation rather than pursuing enforcement. They are working with the vendors to make sure that they can move to approved areas.
The Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment also highlighted that they also provide time and guidance to the vendors to make that transition.
In the General Assembly sitting, she also highlighted some concerning practices improper disposal of waste such as coconut husks. These improper practices can contribute to health issues by the way of mosquito breeding,
With this, Minister Clarke has called for more personal responsibility among vendors.
