Dr Terrance Drew has visited Cardin Home with a number of senior officers and representatives from the Ministry of Health as major rehabilitation work has started on the historic site. The renovation work is being done as a part of the government’s promise to transform the facility ahead of its 100 year anniversary.
Notably, Cardin Home started as the infirmary in 1927 and was subsequently renamed to honor James Derrick Cardin. For nearly a century, the institution has been an important part of the healthcare landscape of the country.
The rehabilitation work for the institution started on July 20, 2026 and the Prime Minister visited the renovation site on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. He has shared that he is grateful to all the persons who have put in their energies in the project.
As part of the rehabilitation project, the Cardin Home will see upgrades in their residential buildings. The officials have shared that the upgrades include plumbing, flooring, new roofs, furnishings, electrical systems, security enhancements, among other things.
The authorities have also confirmed that the establishment will also have other upgrades to ensure a safer, more comfortable and dignified environment for residents.
The Prime Minister, who also serves as the Minister of Health for the country, expressed that The Cardin Home is a place of care and refuge for vulnerable members of our society. He also added that the planned transformation will represent the most significant investment in the institution in nearly a century.
The officials have shared that the renovations will be carried out by the residents of His Majesty’s Prison. The other organisations which are supporting the renovation initiative include T.D.C. Building Supplies.
The private donors and several other parties from across the island have also extended their support to the initiative. Dr Terrance Drew has extended his sincere gratitude to all the people who are supporting the effort of the government.
The government of St Kitts and Nevis, in their statement, said, “Together, we are building a Cardin Home that will proudly enter its second century as a modern institution where every resident can live with comfort, dignity and respect.”
