The government of St Kitts and Nevis has established an ad hoc advisory for the review of the Special Sustainability Zones Authorisation Act. The Prime Minister has shared that the establishment of the review committee will align with the government’s commitment to promoting transparency and good governance.
The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis has shared that the independent body will examine the legislation carefully. The body will also address the pubic concerns which have been raised by the people of the island.
The Prime Minister has shared that they will make sure that the legislation will be implemented in a transparent and accountable manner. The advisory body will be giving inputs and making recommendations on the legislation.
The officials have shared that they will deliberate on all the amendments and procedural improvements and safeguards. The advisory body will help in making sure that the Special Sustainability Zones Authorization Act 2025 is implemented with the confidence of the people of the island nation.
The Prime Minister has clarified yet again to the members of the public that the SSZ Act can not in itself create or approve any special sustainability zones. The Prime Minister has also clarified that the act is not tied to any private developments in particular.
Instead, the act lays down the rules and processes which any proposed development will have to pass through in order to get approvals. They will lay down the clear processes which the future proposals must be revaluated on.
The advisory committee will consist of several stakeholders from the various sectors of the country. Thee members are:
- Saint Kitts Christian Council;
- Saint Kitts Evangelical Association;
- Saint Kitts-Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce;
- Saint Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union;
- Bankers and Financial Services Association;
- Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions;
- Eastern Caribbean Central Bank;
- Organisation of Rastafari in Unity;
- Saint Kitts and Nevis Medical and Dental Association;
- Saint Kitts and Nevis Bar Association;
- Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Eastern Caribbean (Saint Kitts-Nevis Branch);
- Saint Kitts-Nevis Institute of Architects;
- Saint Kitts and Nevis Building Contractors Association; and
- Saint Christopher National Trust.
The nation has also invited the experts from the OECS Authority, OECS Bar Association and the Caribbean Development Bank to make sure that legislation is implemented to deliver long term benefits of the people of the island nation.
