The distribution of a second paycheck to public sector employees in St Kitts and Nevis, as well as retirees and STEP workers, on Tuesday (December 21), reflects the Government’s gratitude for the diligent work accomplished over the last 20 months amid a pandemic.
The Honourable Eugene Hamilton, Minister of Social Security, utilised part of his Budget presentation in the National House of Assembly on Monday (December 20) to praise employee contributions.
“Here, Mr. Speaker, is an employer,” Hamilton said, “knowing hard effort, experiencing and comprehending the agony of the last 20 months, recognising that given the economic surpluses created despite COVID reality, those who have been burdened must be compensated.”
In two words, he summed up the government’s payment of a double salary.
Minister Hamilton stated, “With the news of a double wage, our country has felt the generosity and compassion of my Government.” “We learned about a double salary on day one [of the budget], making it five double incomes in seven years.” That is without any legislation compelling us to pay double pay, which I believe is unprecedented.”
The double salary is equivalent to receiving an additional month’s compensation in the same month. It is generally paid around the holidays and during Carnival.
