A meteorite-like object fell from the sky on Friday in the Sanchore town in the Indian state of Rajasthan, and it has left the locals startled.
Officials have confirmed to IANS that an object which weighs around 2.78 kg fell on the ground from the sky on Friday morning, which, as a result, formed a one-foot deep crater in the earth.
Its fall created a massive explosion like sound which echoed in almost around a two-kilometre stretch. The locals then rushed to the police station and the local administration to give them the information regarding the explosive sound.
Bhupendra Yadav, Sub Divisional Magistrate, reached the spot and was shocked to see the piece which was very hot at the time when Yadav had arrived on the scene.
As the object which fell off the sky, was emitting heat, it was then allowed to cool, and it was then packed in a jar and from there, transported to the police station.
The officials have said that they had inspected the site where the object fell from the sky with a loud explosion-like sound.
They added that it appears to be a piece of meteorite prima facie, which is now seized and kept safe as the object shall be sent to the laboratory for further examination.
The officials also had it tested in a private laboratory located at a jeweller’s shop in Sanchore who has confirmed that the object has metallic properties of Platinium, Germanium, Nickel and Iron (10.23 per cent of nickel, 85.86 per cent of iron, platinum 0.5 per cent, cobbit 0.78 per cent, germanium 0.02 per cent, antimony 0.01 per cent niobium 0.01 and other 3.02 per cent).
The teams of geologists in the Geographical Survey of India’s Jaipur and Ahmedabad office have been contacted for the further examination of the meteorite.
The object is currently at Sanchore police station, said Yadav adding that the place where it had fallen has been cordoned off.
