The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew addressed the members of the media for the March edition of the Prime Minister’s Roundtable. The meeting was hosted on Tuesday and brought the people of the island up to date with the happenings in the world.
The Prime Minister spoke regarding the 50th meeting of the CARICOM Heads of the Government meeting. Leaders from all over the region came together for the four day event in St Kitts and Nevis. He also provided the people of the country updates on his trip to Ghana which ran from March 3 to March 7.
The Prime Minister talked about how the nation has been very active in the region during the previous four week period. Dr Drew said that during the period, St kitts and Nevis has hosted a historic regional meeting, strengthened key diplomatic relationships, expanded international partnerships, and received encouraging assessments regarding the country’s economic direction.
He spoke about the Visa Free Access which St Kitts and Nevis secured with Ghana, allowing the general passport holders of St Kitts and Nevis to travel freely to Ghana. He also asserted that during his trip to the African nation, he secured an arrangement with Ghana for the inclusion of Ghanaian Medical experts to come and work in St Kitts and Nevis.
He has also signed an agreement with the University of Ghana to provide education opportunities to the children from St Kitts and Nevis
Dr Drew provided updates on the various major developments which have taken place in the country during February and March. He spoke about the IMF Report, which gave some encouraging assessments regarding the state of the economy of St Kitts and Nevis.
Dr Drew has shared that the nation has been transitioning to renewable energy which is supporting the growth of the economy and decreasing the nation’s reliance on international exports. The Prime Minister also talked about decreasing the St Kitts and Nevis economy’s reliance on the CBI programme of the country.
During his interaction with the members of the media, he spoke about the government’s plans to develop the tourism, agriculture and other sectors of the community.
He also spoke about the SSZ Authorization Act during his address with the media. He said that Nevis Island’s Destiny SSZ has come to the Federal Government for assessment. He also asserted that the report from the Ad-hoc Committee has also come. This report includes some promising proposals for the strengthening of the Special Sustainability Zone Project.
Dr Drew promised that these changes will be implemented in the act in the next parliamentary sitting which is imminent.
