The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis has clarified his powers in the management of Land Use in Nevis. He shared that he is aware that some efforts are being made to bring him Prime Minister into the issue.

The social media has been rife and demanding answers from the Prime Minister of the country regarding the privatization of the land in Nevis. This demand comes after the passage of the Special Sustainability Zones Bill in the national assembly.

According to this bill, the private individuals, who want to establish their business in St kitts and Nevis have to adhere to some guidelines, promise sustainable and climate friendly usage of the lands to be able to conduct their businesses.

The social media is rife with news pieces and opinion pieces which blame the Prime Minister for the “fiasco” of SSZ in Nevis. Dr Terrance Drew had confirmed at the time of the passage of the bill that any businesses that come to Nevis under the special sustainability zones will be the jurisdiction of Nevis Island Administration.

In a recent social media post, Dr Terrance Drew had clarified this once again and shared that the constitution of St Kitts and Nevis is clear on the subject. The federal government can not influence the Nevis Island Administration in how they make their business decisions.

He clarified the only circumstances concerning immigration and national security are the exception to this rule. The Prime Minister has thus urged the  people of the island, including the social media opinionists, to not bring himself or the federal cabinet of the country into the discussions.

He also added that they are a matter for the Nevis Island Administration and the people of Nevis. The Prime Minister has defended right to Nevis’s autonomy in the matter saying that the NIA and the Nevis Cabinet for the members of the administration can make the right decisions for their land.
