Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Dr Geoffery Hanley, attended a meeting with the management and staff of the Joshua Obadiah Williams Primary School and the New Basseterre High School on October 4, 2022.
During the meeting, The Minister of Education announced that the Ministry was starting work on the two schools.
The Joshua Obadiah Williams Primary School suffered significant losses due to a fire in the earlier months of 2022. Since then, the school teachers and students have held these classes at an alternative location.
Dr Hanley addressed the issue, empathizing with the students and the teachers. He acknowledged that losing the school (to fire) was extremely tough. He stated that even though he thought the students and teachers had a good working environment, he knew it was not the school.
He promised the management of the school that the Ministry, headed by himself, was working tirelessly to ensure that the Joshua Obadiah Williams Primary School was built.
Further, Dr Geoffery Hanley assured that according to the designs and drawings of the public school, which he had the chance to see, the new development was a state-of-the-art primary school.
The Minister of Education made particular suggestions, stating what they wanted in the design. He assured the meeting attendees that they would have one of the modern primary schools for renovation.
Dr Geoffery Hanley stated that the Ministry of Education is working to do whatever is needed for the schools.
Following a previous announcement, Dr Hanley reiterated in the meeting that the Ministry of education is working on building the new New Basseterre High School.
He announced that the demolition tenders for the old high school structure would be made public by the end of October.
Dr Geoffery Hanley stated that in the time it would take to build the New Basseterre High School, the Ministry intends to uplift the standard of all the other schools on the island.
To this effect, the Minister of Education stated that his Ministry had started an island-wide school rehabilitation project.
