Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew delivered a resounding national address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly. The first part of the Prime Minister’s address focussed on the climate crisis and climate justice.

The leadership of St Kitts and Nevis under Dr Drew has been a very vocal advocate for climate justice on international platforms like the UN. The Prime Minister has attended three sessions of the UN General Assembly prior to the 2025 edition.

In all these sessions, Prime Minister Drew and his fellow ministers have spoken in some capacity or the other about the climate crisis. During his national address, Dr Drew highlighted how the hurricanes hitting the Caribbean in recent years have been getting stronger.

He carried on talking about the adverse effect that the hurricanes have on the small island nations across the Caribbean. He said that the crisis that is being faced by the Island nations was never created by them and yet they are paying a high price for it.

As such Dr Terrance Drew highlighted that the international community has to take responsibility for their role in creating the climate crisis. Further, they also have to work together to mitigate this issue at its roots.

The Prime Minister highlighted that they have to take this extremely seriously. In the past, the international community has made some promises only to break them in the long run. According to Dr Drew, the world has to step away from the practice of putting profit before people.

The map of human destiny is not drawn merely by the large and the loud but also by the just and the judicious, said the Prime Minister. He highlighted that today the small nations have an equal say in the future of the world as the larger and more powerful nations.

The passive work that has been seen thus far is not enough, says the Prime Minister. Language must be matched by labour and promises must be matched by payments, he added.
