Cricket West Indies has named Roston Chase as the new Test captain beginning with the upcoming home series against Australia which is scheduled for late June. Also Jomel Warrican has been named as vice captain for the team.
The decision was announced after a board meeting of CWI’s directors on May 16, 2025. This meeting is a landmark moment in the directive strategy for West Indies cricket leadership. This meeting is a landmark which marks the adoption of a very broad data based approach to identify the best fit to lead the team forward.
Through a cross analysis framework, CWI performed psychometric evaluations of leadership, oral strategic interviews and communication assessment for the senior coaching staff.
Significantly, from an initial shortlist of six players including John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Roston Chase, and Jomel Warrican, Chase was the top-ranked choice.
Also, West Indies Test team acting captain Shai Hope and the current ODI and T20I captain, declined the invitation for consideration, wishing to focus on his existing leadership positions.
In addition, Chase’s first test as captain will be the “WI Home: Full Ah Energy” series against Australia, starting with the first Test at Kensington Oval on June 25.
CWI President praises the selection process
CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow marked it as “one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking” processes, highlighting its significance in determining the future of the Test team.
Daren Sammy, Head Coach, also came forward and stated that he is fully supportive of the selection. Also he noted that the new captain has won the respect of his peers, accepts the responsibility that comes with the position and has displayed the leadership skills which will help take the team forward.
The selection marks a change of direction in West Indies cricket, affirming responsibility, transparency, and alignment with international best practices. It appears this approach will serve as a model for future changes made in all formats.
