Labour union Verdi has said that workers at six Germany Amazon sites will be going on strike on Monday as a protest over the safety after some staff at logistics centres has tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus.
On Sunday, Verdi said that the strike would last for at least 48 hours, and the motto will be ‘Good and healthy work’, to denounce what is called a lack of transparency by the US retail giant after the workers had tested positive for COVID-19 coronavirus.
Verdi representative Orhan Akmansaid that they have information that the COVID-19 coronavirus infected at least 30 to 40 colleagues.
Amazon has been facing a long-running battle with the labour unions in Germany for better pay and better working conditions for the logistics workers, who have been staging frequent strikes for the same motive since 2013.
Verdi said that the strikes would hit Amazon sites in Bad Hersfeld, Leipzig, Werne, Rheinberg and Koblenz. It said that Amazon was putting its profit ahead of the safety of the workers.
Amazon has rejected the accusations and said in a statement that as of June Amazon had invested 4 billion dollars on the measures to protect its workforce and clients all over the world from the risk of COVID-19 coronavirus infections.
A spokesman for Amazon in Germany said that Germany, is the biggest market for Amazon after the United States, since February, Amazon has ordered 21 million pairs of gloves,470 million hand disinfection bottles, 39 million boxes of disinfectant wipes and 19 million masks and other face protection gear.
