The Department of Social Services of St Kitts, supported by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), organised an empowerment session on Thursday, October 6, 2022. More than 100 senior citizens from across St Kitts participated in the session.

The event was held at the CUNA Conference Room at Fortlands. The session featured a lot of crucial information regarding COVID-19 vaccine boosters, healthy eating habits, exercise, and physical activity.

Dr Dwayne Archibald discussed vaccine boosters, giving the seniors a lot of new information. During the session, he said that even though the local cases have declined significantly in St Kitts and Nevis, the nation’s vulnerable population, the elderly, still must take measures to protect themselves.

Dr Archibald stated that, as he expected, there was some hesitancy from the crowd of the elderly. However, we are still on the COVID fight.

During the discussion, he acknowledged that the fight is no longer as rampant as before. Still, he stated that, as much as possible, the efforts are ongoing to decrease the numbers and make them non-existent in the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis.

On the other hand, Delwayne Delaney conducted the discussion on exercise. He led the group of seniors to a session in exercise, with the view that exercise remains a crucial recommendation for overcoming COVID-19 infection.

In addition, it also helps in reducing the risk of developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and diabetes.

He urged the elderly to continue the exercises in the days and weeks to come.

According to Delaney, exercising up to 10 to 15 minutes daily can be highly beneficial as it keeps the heart rate up.

Delwayne stated that while he understood that going to a gym or joining an exercise group may be difficult, it is essential to realise that something is better than nothing with physical exercise.

He also added that what they will be doing today (in terms of exercise) would clearly indicate what can be done and fit into their routines.
