St Kitts and Nevis is facing acute water shortages. The Minister of Public Utilities, Konris Maynard, delivered a national address on the issue at the first budgetary sitting of the newly elected government. The Minister has recently shared an update regarding the National Water Crisis and how the St Kitts Department of Water Services is dealing with the crisis.
Minister of Public Utilities Konris Maynard recently visited the La Guerite reservoir that feeds some of the Basseterre areas, including Greenlands and the Village. Talking about the severity of the “national water crisis”, he said: The tank is almost empty. There is not enough water to feed all the areas.
He further stated that the St Kitts Department of Water Services would have to shut down the reservoir to allow it to build back up so that other areas of Basseterre, like The Village area, can get some water.
Recently, Minister Konris Maynard shared another update on their efforts to deal with the water shortage. On Friday, December 23, 2022, the government of St Kitts and Nevis formalized an agreement with Royal Utilities to provide Desalinated Water to the Frigate Bay Area.
According to the update the Minister of Public utilities shared, They are still testing the setup. St Kitts Water Department is conducting the test by pumping water into the Frigate Bay area.
Minister Maynard Revealed that if the setup is successful, the government of St Kitts and Nevis will be able to divert water normally from Frigate Bay to other parts of Basseterre over the upcoming weeks.
Further, he revealed that The expected amount of water available is between 150,000 to 300,000 gallons a day.
Minister Konris Maynard acknowledged that This is only a drop in the bucket of what we need. Thus, the Minister has urged all the people of St Kitts and Nevis to conserve the water supply that is available to them.
