St Kitts and Nevis delegation visited the Southern Institute for Medicinal Plants in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Their visit aimed to promote collaboration and knowledge on medicinal plant research, cannabis benefits, and innovative wildlife management techniques.
The St Kitts and Nevis Medical Cannabis Authority is partnering with the Southern Institute for Medicinal Plants to develop a comprehensive certification course for medicinal cannabis.
Dr. Janana Snowden, the Institute’s Executive Director and Chief Scientist, led discussions on the Institute’s leadership in cannabis research, focusing on its medicinal applications.
He also highlighted the Institute’s role in cannabis research, medicinal applications, and designing a tailored curriculum for restorative cannabis certification.
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center will facilitate an online courses for St Kitts and Nevis residents.
The online course aimed to ensure the accessibility and participation in educational initiatives of St Kitts and Nevis residents
The meeting at Southern Institute for Medicinal Plants in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was attended by the following deligations :

- Dr. Machel Emanuel, Professor at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica
- Dr. Hadiya Claxton, Special Envoy for Investment, Development, and International Business Relations
- Dr Orlando McMeans, Chancellor-Dean of the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center,
- Dr. C. Reuben Walker, Executive Vice Chancellor of the Southern University Research and Extension Center.
The Southern University, a pioneer in cannabis research, was the first historically black university in the USA to launch its own THC medical cannabis products in July 2020. St Kitts and Nevis plans to use Southern University’s expertise for medicinal cannabis application.
