The St Kitts and Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) Referee Department announced the launch of several new initiatives, with an aim to improve the quality of refereeing and match officiating in domestic football.

These initiatives were highlighted by the Head of the SKNFA Referee department, Graeme Browne, during a press conference held at the NGBC Technical Centre.

According to Graeme Browne, the association is dedicated to address the concerns voiced by local clubs regarding officiating standards. He said that the association is taking steps and is continuously working to enhance the overall officiating experience for both the players and the spectators.

The launch of these initiatives marked a significant step towards improving refereeing standards in the island nation.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) System

The introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) System, is a key development in this initiative for continuous support of decision making on the field.

St Kitts and Nevis has its first FIFA – certified video match official, Tristley Bassue, who will play an important role in implementing the VAR system.

Furthermore, Browne said that the clubs in the league have been continuously complaining about having VAR in their leagues and a meeting was held last year where the SKNFA president gave his approval to continue and proceed.

Professionalism and training

Graeme Browne said that the SKNFA Referee Department is also focused on improving the professionalism of management with referees undergoing intense training, including fitness sessions at Warner Park, to improve their performance.

He also added that as a Federation, they are focused on improving the quality of refereeing by providing the officials with better tools needed to make accurate and fair decisions during matches.
