Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew held a significant meeting with the members of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission during their visit to the nation last week. The meeting was held as part of the Article IV consultation discussions on economic developments and macroeconomic policies.

As per the information, during their visit, the IMF team collected various economic and financial information and discussed with officials the country’s economic developments and policies.

Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance, Terrance Drew was supported in the meeting by Financial Secretary Hilary Hazel and Deputy Financial Secretary, Sylvia Manning-Gumbs.

The meeting comprised several bilateral discussions under Article IV of the IMF’s Articles of Agreement, with members. These meetings are held every year.

Notably, The IMF delegations, along with deputy managing director Bo Li visited St Kitts and Nevis from February 14-16. During the visit, he met prime minister Terrance Drew and held meetings with Governor Timothy Antoine, chairman Camillo Gonsalves, and the members of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Monetary Council.

Besides discussing development, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has taken note of the economic challenges facing St. Kitts and Nevis. The decline in revenues from the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program has raised concerns about the country’s fiscal stability and economic resilience.

IMF Deputy Managing Director Bo Li’s visit to St Kitts and Nevis underscores the IMF’s recognition of these challenges. He also discussed the economic prospects of the country.

He also highlighted the country’s membership in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) as a potential source of support during these challenging times.

This assurance from the IMF reflects a recognition of the interconnectedness of ECCU member countries and the importance of regional cooperation in addressing economic vulnerabilities.

While discussing potential financial assistance, the IMF emphasized the importance of fiscal discipline and responsible debt management. Bo Li stressed the necessity of “ensuring that strong public finance and debt sustainability policies are in place” as prerequisites for any assistance provided.

By acknowledging St. Kitts and Nevis’s economic challenges and offering reassurance through its ECCU membership, the IMF signals its commitment to supporting the country’s efforts to navigate the current economic downturn.

This recognition of the country’s position within the ECCU framework provides hope for potential assistance and collaboration in addressing the decline in CBI revenues and promoting economic stability and growth in St. Kitts and Nevis.
