Basseterre, St. Kitts: The Irish Town Primary School has been officially renamed Halliday-Smith Primary School. The renaming ceremony was held on the Wednesday morning, June 26, 2024 at the school premises.
The renaming of the school was decided by the two influential figures that have significantly served at the school: Maizee Halliday, past principal and a progressive educator, and the late Slyvia Smith, an idol and past teacher.
The ceremony was attended by key delegates including Minister of Education, Geoffery Hanley; Principal of Irish Town Primary School, Shenel Byron-Cassius; Governor General, Dame Marcella Liburd; Former MP for Central Basseterre and Permanent Secretary, Lisa-Romayne Pistana; Chief Education Officer, Francil Morris, and other education officials.
Past principals, teachers, and students were also in attendance at the Irish Town Primary School now the Halliday-Smith Primary School. The renaming marked a milestone in the school’s long and distinguished history.
“Today, as we rename this school, we pay tribute to the legacy of Maizee Halliday and late Slyvia Smith. The ceremony is a testament to our collective commitment to nurturing young minds, fostering resilience, and building a stronger community,” stated Geoffery Hanley.
“Our new name, Halliday-Smith Primary School, was chosen to reflect our values, aspirations, and the inclusive, forward-thinking community we strive to be,” said Shenel Byron-Cassius.
“Renaming the school is a symbol of the enduring power of education, may this institution continue to be a catalyst for positive change, and a source of education for all,” commented Maizee Halliday.
Dr. Geoffery Hanley congratulates the staff, students, and the Irish Town community and invites the citizens to give their recommendations.
He also shared that The Halliday-Smith Primary School, with its new start, will become the Primary School of Modern Language and Music. Both mandarin and Spanish will be taught at the school.
The renaming to Halliday-Smith Primary School signifies a new chapter for the school, reassuring the commitment to excellence in education and community service.
