The Prime Minister, Dr Terrance Drew, addressed the nation on the momentous occasion and detailed the country’s achievements in the four decades since it gained Independence. He applauded the residents and citizens of St Kitts and Nevis for contributing to the nation’s development. He asked for their continued support in future in order to ensure a smooth work environment for the newly elected government.
He also outlined the progress the government under his leadership had made one month into their tenure. Further, he took to his Facebook account to commemorate the occasion. He shared glimpses of the event through pictures, while he wrote:
Today, our patriotic pride (as a people’s nation) has been on full display as a nation for our Independence Anniversary, observed under the theme: ‘Refocus, Re-create, Redesign: Independence 39.’
I must commend our various armed and unarmed units who participated in today’s ceremonial parade, displaying their skills and discipline. Also, it was quite heartwarming to see so many of you the spectators gathered for the ocassion dressed in your national colours and various outfits.
he further stated, When our flag was raised on September 19 1983 so too were the hopes and dreams of our people. We are are proud people, a hopeful people led by our forefathers and our foremothers from British colonial to our own dream of freedom and self sufficiency.
Each Independence season, it seems only right for us to ask, “Are we truly independent? Are our people free? The debates are lively and robust but we can all agree that our Federation has come along way since that day 39 years ago.
The work continues to better our nation in moving forward. We are bound together as a people with such common destiny.
May God bless our country and people.
