Ex India fielding coach Trevor Penney has been designated as the assistant coach of West Indies cricket team for limited-overs formats.
Cricket West Indies has given Warwickshire stalwart Penney a two-year agreement.
Cricket West Indies affirmed in a statement that the 51-year-old Penney’s field of expertise is fielding and he will operate with the West Indies team in white-ball formats (One-Day Internationals and T20 International matches).
He will link to the West Indies team on January 2 as they begin rehearsals for the forthcoming international home series versus Ireland. The tour will highlight three ODIs and as many T20s from January 7 to 19.
“I’m cherished and excited to be given this opportunity to operate with this splendid cluster of cricketers and crew led by Kieron Pollard and Phil Simmons,” Penney said.
“I’ve been fortunate enough for the last few years to operate with numerous members of the team and the Caribbean is like ‘home away from home’ for me being concerned in the CPL.
“We have a couple of big T20 World Cups appearing up (in Australia 2020 and India 2021), and I aim to try and develop everybody and be as sound as we can and probably win these two significant ICC events for the excellent people of the West Indies.”
Penney, who performed 158 first-class and 291 List A matches for Warwickshire, has vast coaching expertise, possessing work with various international teams, including India, Sri Lanka, Netherlands and USA.
He has also worked as an assistant coach at King’s XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League as well as an assistant coach with the St Lucia Zouks and St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Most lately he was a member of the Barbados Trident coaching crew throughout their successful campaign in the 2019 CPL.
Commenting on Penney’s selection, West Indies head coach, Phil Simmons said: “Trevor (Penney) is an outstanding coach and has shown this wherever he has worked.
“He has tremendous expertise with Sri Lanka and India at the essential international level, and in most T20 leagues across the globe including the CPL. He brings enormous energy and is very well respected by all the players.”
