The shops of two operatives of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) were set on fire on Wednesday evening in May Pen, Clarendon.
This incident of setting shops on fire is being considered as allegedly politically motivated.
The Sevens Road shop of Sandra Mills, JLP polling division captain in Clarendon Central was destroyed, and that of Lorraine Green Mason, JLP councillor caretaker for the May Pen West Division was damaged.
Mills said that she lost more than $300,000 in goods because of the fire while Mason reported losses of around $100,000 and said that only a section of the structure was damaged.
Two fire units extinguished the fire.
According to Green Mason, the incident was politically motivated, and she knows who the culprits were.
The claim, however, was not confirmed by the May Pen police and they are now investigating the matter.
Green Mason said that Jamaica had fought hard and long to move away from this kind of tribal politics.
Meanwhile, the JLP’s Clarendon Central candidate Mike Henry said it was now obvious that a threatening trend is developing.
He said of the six shops in the area, only the two owned by known JLP members were targeted.
