After Hurricane Dorian devastated the Bahamas in September 2019, the country is now counting on sports to revive the nation. The country has decided to bring back tourism and funds to their land by attracting more visitors from all the around.
The intentions are to showcase the charm of the island instead of the wrecks that were left behind by the hurricane. The Bahamas is organising men’s basketball tournament during which there will be telecasts of the islands’ famed beaches and not just shots of the remains of the Hurricane Dorian.
Deputy General of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation, Ellison Tommy Thompson quoted that after the hurricane the word was spread out that the Bahamas ruined by the natural catastrophe. Still, they don’t realise that the Bahamas is not one island.
As per Thompson, the best aid the Bahamas require as for now is more tourism. “we require you to arrive and spend the tourism dollars for us to be able to have supplies for rehabilitation. If you don’t come, you’re going to put us in an even more unfortunate situation.”
Eight team Atlantis tournament opening on Wednesday is featuring sports stars like No. 6 North Carolina, No. 8 Gonzaga, No. 11 Oregon and No. 13 Seton Hall who are supporting in the cause. Brandon Robinson is also leading a donation drive to raise funds for Bahamian support funds.
The category five hurricane struck the northern Abaco and Grand Bahama islands. Around 67 people are confirmed dead while hundreds are still missing.
