Basseterre, St. Kitts – With the cabinet of St. Kitts and Nevis attending its meeting in the traditional Afro-Caribbean attire, the celebrations for the History and Heritage Month of 2025 appear to have been kick-started.
History and Heritage Month is celebrated in St. Kitts and Nevis in the month of February each year to honor and celebrate the Afro-Caribbean heritage of the people living in St. Kitts and Nevis.
These celebrations are a reflection of the rich cultural past of the people of the nation and educate the next generation about their lineage. The celebrations also honor the resilience and achievements of the people who had settled in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Marking the start of the celebrations, the federal cabinet, which was led by Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, held its meeting in traditional attire. Ambassadors Leon Natta-Nelson and Kenneth Douglas were also present during the meeting, following which a photograph was taken of the entire cabinet as a mark of remembrance.
History and Heritage Month, which is observed in St. Kitts and Nevis, provides an opportunity for the citizens to connect with their past and remember the struggles and achievements of their ancestors.
The history of St. Kitts and Nevis has been shaped by African and Caribbean values, and during the celebrations of History and Heritage Month, these values are put on display for the people to celebrate their diverse and rich history.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew stated that history could provide crucial insights into the future, and by acknowledging the past, a nation could progress into the future by avoiding several pitfalls and ensuring that the future remains prosperous.
He said that the citizens must not forget the great sacrifices made by our ancestors and also celebrate their spirit to stand against various challenges that they faced during their lifetime. He said that it is upon the strong foundation laid down by the ancestors that the nation was now progressing steadily toward a prosperous future.
The Prime Minister also stated that the people must also embrace the changes that were being brought forth by the evolving technologies while remaining connected with their past.
As part of the month-long celebrations to mark History and Heritage Month, the government organizes various events, educational programs, cultural exhibitions, and community gatherings to enable the citizens to connect with their rich history.
During this time, informative lectures and storytelling sessions are organized in schools, museums, and cultural institutions to highlight the struggles and achievements of the people who laid down the foundation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
During the current year, the government is also planning to organize cultural workshops, historical tours, heritage parades, and educational programs as part of the celebrations.
The Prime Minister said that by participating in these events the citizens felt a strong sense of pride for their history and heritage.
