St Kitts and Nevis: The St Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards is all set to enhance its analytical and testing capabilities with the arrival of new equipments.
The SKNBS is set to receive a cutting-edge RT-PCR equipment that will significantly enhance its testing capabilities, and a state-of-the-art Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AA Spectrometer) that will enable enhance the metal analysis capabilities.
Notably, the RT-PCR or Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction, is an advanced technology used to amplify and analyse DNA, providing critical insights in fields such as the gene expression, mutation detection, and pathogen identification.
This machine will enable the SKNBS to perform a variety of vital tasks, including the detection and quantification of pathogens, monitoring microbial degradation, identifying species, etcetera.
Acquiring of the new equipment will help the St Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards to offer more accurate and comprehensive results of the microbial tests for food and water, improving accuracy.
Similarly, another remarkable equipment that is expected to arrive soon is Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) which will enable the precise analysis of the metal concentrations in various sample types, marking an improvement of the SKNBS’s laboratory services.
Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy is an analytical technique used to determine the concentration of specific elements within a sample by measuring the absorption of light at unique wavelengths by atoms. It is also a crucial tool for metal analysis.

It is also to be noted that once the equipment is in use, the Bureau of Standards is planning to primarily use it for metal analysis in water samples.
In addition to the water analysis, the AA Spectrometer will also offer several new opportunities for the bureau. The equipment can also detect the metals in a variety of sample types, including soil and food.
This acquisition of these new equipments will help St Kitts and Nevis in reinforcing the commitment to maintain high standards in public health, safety, and environment protection.
