St Kitts and Nevis’ Minister of State for Equality, Isalean Phillip, used a national forum organized by the federal parliament to strongly condemn all forms of violence, especially against the most vulnerable in society.
This was due to recent violence against Pharaoh McClean by senior Jason King. The incident happened when McClean was returning home from the first senior prom organized by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Aging and Disability on November 10, 2023, when he was attacked.
Minister of State Phillip, who is also a senator in parliament, said he was in very good spirits and doing well after the incident. He then condemned the actions of the criminals.
Not only is Minister Isalean Phillip standing against domestic violence, but Senior Gender Officer Shinnel Charles has also taken a stand on the same frightening issue.
A mural advocating an end to domestic violence in St Kitts and Nevis will be unveiled on 27/02/2023 in November as the Department of Equality prepares to observe 16 Days against Sexual Violence.
The mural will be painted on a wall on Pond Road in Newtown. It describes the consequences of physical violence against a woman. Senior Equality Officer Shinnel Charles said the visual representation of the impact of domestic violence was impressive.
“I don’t think there are murals in our country that depict domestic violence, so I think this is important for us. As Minister Isalean Phillip said, this is just the beginning for us in terms of murals,” female Charles noted.
“We have more murals across the country never to forget domestic violence or violence against women, children or men and make sure it is never juxtaposed. – I take this opportunity to condemn all forms of violence, especially when it comes to our vulnerable citizens, residents, especially older people,” said Phillip.
The main purpose of the program is to condemn all forms of violence, neglect and abuse, especially against older people and other vulnerable populations in the Federation.
